MUSIC

The Torelli is an outgoing, cheerful piece in three movements, written to be played in the reverberant stone churches of its origin.

Concerto in D

Giuseppe Torelli

Sonata for Trumpet and Organ

Alan Hovhaness

Sonata for Trumpet and Piano

Halsey Stevens

The influences of Hovhaness' interests and travels in Asia and Armenia are evident in his music.  An introverted and contemplative piece, the chant-like calm distracts the listener from the inner complexities of rhythm and harmony.

Stevens' rhythmically exciting outer movments cradle a sweet and mysterious middle movement.  Here the harmonic influence of Stevens' life-long interest in Bartok and Hungary are evident. This piece and its composer deserve to be heard much more.
